Rototoms produce excellent Latin percussion sounds with a style similar to the timpani, but with a quite distinctive tone. Rototoms have a particular type of drum shell in which the drumhead and counterhoop are mounted on an aluminum spoke frame, through which the tension rods are attached to a bottom frame which is mounted on a threaded center bolt. If you rotate the frame it increases or decreases the tension on the skin, changing the pitch of the drum quickly and easily.
