Designed for orchestral projection
The YSL-881 is built to deliver the broad, focused sound many orchestral players look for in a professional trombone. Yamaha uses heavier gauge brass throughout the instrument to help create a stable, centred response, particularly at louder dynamics where projection and control become increasingly important. The large 220 mm bell also contributes to the trombone’s open feel, helping notes speak clearly across the full range of the instrument. Whether you’re performing in a symphony orchestra, brass section, or audition setting, the YSL-881 maintains clarity and balance while supporting expressive phrasing and strong dynamic contrast.
Yellow brass bell for clear response
The one-piece yellow brass bell is hand-hammered thousands of times to improve resonance, consistency, and projection. Yellow brass produces a clear, direct sound with strong presence, helping the trombone respond quickly across a wide range of dynamics. This gives the instrument flexibility for both powerful orchestral passages and more controlled, delicate playing. The thick-walled bell construction also helps maintain a focused tonal centre, keeping the sound stable and balanced during demanding repertoire and extended performances.
Responsive slide feel and control
Yamaha designed the YSL-881 with a narrow slide construction to support quicker, more agile slide technique. This can be particularly useful during fast orchestral passages, technical studies, or solo repertoire where accuracy and fluid movement are important. The yellow brass outer slide works alongside the nickel silver inner slide to provide a smooth playing action with dependable durability for regular performance use. Combined with the instrument’s balanced weight distribution, the slide feels responsive and controlled without becoming overly resistant during extended rehearsals or concerts.
Professional features for regular performance
Built in Japan, the YSL-881 combines professional-level craftsmanship with practical features suited to long-term use. The gold lacquer finish helps protect the instrument while preserving its natural resonance and appearance over time. Yamaha also includes an SL48L mouthpiece, giving you a reliable starting setup straight out of the case. The supplied hard case provides added protection during transport between rehearsals, performances, and lessons. Altogether, the YSL-881 offers the consistency, tonal flexibility, and dependable construction expected from a professional orchestral trombone.
